Among his numerous works R E Latham prepared an English translation of Marco Polo’s travels for Penguin Classics in the 1950s. Papers relating to this, and to his translation for the same series of Lucretius’ De rerum natura, have ended up among the DMLBS collection: we hope to be able to find a new home for them with the Penguin archive.
One exchange of three letters from December 1957 relating to the Marco Polo project shows a lighter side.
On 13 December Latham was sent the start of the proofs of the book, which were accompanied by a letter announcing ‘rather a tragedy with the map’, which had been supplied in draft form by Latham along with the typescript:
